Fall semester ushers in new student celebration, campus upgrades

As students return and a new class of Eagles arrives, Florida Gulf Coast University’s fall semester begins with a new student celebration, upgraded technology, enhanced campus spaces and major projects that continue to shape the university’s future.
Behind the scenes, the university spent the summer investing in improvements that will have a lasting impact on campus life.

‘Welcome to the Nest’ event
Florida Gulf Coast University will kick off the fall semester with its first “Welcome to the Nest” celebration Aug. 16 at Alico Arena.
More than 2,500 new Eagles — first-time-in-college and transfer students — as well as returning students are invited to participate in the fun.
The event is part of Weeks of Welcome, a series of programs and activities held during the first few weeks of each semester to help new students transition to campus life and encourage returning Eagles to reconnect with the university community.
“This high-energy celebration will feature music, food and giveaways as we introduce first-time-in-college and transfer students to our traditions and the sense of community that makes FGCU so special,” FGCU President Aysegul Timur said in a campuswide email announcing the event.
Doors open at 4:30 p.m., with festivities beginning at 5 p.m.
FGCU welcomes Board of Governors
The State University System of Florida’s Board of Governors will meet Sept. 2-3 in the Cohen Student Union ballroom. The last time the BOG convened at FGCU was in 2019.
The 17-member constitutional body governs the network of 12 public universities that includes FGCU and defines the distinctive mission of each institution within the system.
Serving over 430,000 students, it is the second-largest public university system in the nation.
This is the 10th year Florida has ranked No. 1 for higher education by U.S. News & World Report.
Enhancements in the academic corridor
The lawn space extending from Griffin Hall and Reed Hall to Marieb Hall and Holmes Hall has been undergoing improvements over the summer.
According to Miguel Rodriguez-Aquino, senior project manager in Facilities Planning, a new pathway will provide a safer, more direct route through the academic corridor. The landscaping has been refreshed and new outdoor wireless access points have expanded campus Wi-Fi coverage.
“One of the most exciting aspects of the academic corridor enhancements is the significant increase in outdoor seating and gathering spaces available to students, faculty and staff,” said Rodriguez-Aquino.
The project includes shaded seating areas, collaborative spaces and hammock zones where students can study, relax and connect with friends between classes.
A stronger, faster network for campus
This summer, Information Technology Services completed a major network upgrade across FGCU’s athletics complex and the Emergent Technologies Institute off Alico Road. The project modernized core infrastructure, expanded wireless coverage and increased available bandwidth.
Athletics venues — including Alico Arena, baseball, softball and soccer stadiums, the Outdoor Sports Complex, the Lee County/FGCU Aquatics Center and the ESPN trailer — now benefit from a dedicated 50‑gigabit connection, replacing a shared 1 Gb network. In upgraded areas, Wi‑Fi speeds now reach 100 Mbps or more. At ETI, the improvements increase capacity, reliability and overall performance.
“Much of the network infrastructure was 10 to 15 years old and had reached the end of its life. The infrastructure no longer provided the speed, coverage or reliability our campus community requires,” said John Dove, senior associate vice president for Administrative Services & Finance and interim chief information officer.
The work is part of a broader, ongoing effort to modernize FGCU’s technology environment, with additional upgrades planned across all campus buildings through the fall.
A smarter, more connected campus
FGCU is expanding how information flows across campus with a growing network of digital signage building on previous installations of parking availability displays and informational billboards at campus entrances.
New digital signage inside buildings continues that communication, ensuring important information is visible where the campus community lives, learns and works. There are now 25 directories and 50 information displays in 23 different buildings. New and changing on the campus landscape
Construction preparation began over the summer for FGCU’s 10th academic building on the south campus area between the Arts Complex and parking garage 2. Because of this, parking changes will be in effect through spring 2029. Garage 2 will operate with a single entrance and exit, and fifth-floor parking will be reserved for construction personnel. Parking in Lot 7 will also be limited.
Marieb Hall South represents a major expansion of Marieb College of Health & Human Services. Slated to open in 2029, the 158,040-square-foot facility will be the largest academic building on campus.
Meanwhile across campus, Margaret Antonier Hall (formerly Academic Building 9) will be formally dedicated Nov. 19 in recognition of a $10 million gift from the founder and CEO of Miromar Development supporting The Water School and its programs. The building, which opened in 2022, houses STEM-focused programs, research labs and interdisciplinary collaboration.
New initiative for veterans and military-connected students
FGCU has launched a major strategic initiative to expand support for the Eagle military community through the Office of Military & Veteran’s Success. The new assistant vice president for Veteran and Military Programs, Joseph Buhain, leads the effort.
“Everyone in our office is personally driven to engage veterans and dependents on a personal and professional note,” said Buhain, a combat Army veteran and Navy medical officer. “By honoring military service, celebrating leadership and creating meaningful opportunities for engagement, FGCU is building a culture where those who have served our country continue to serve as leaders, mentors, educators and partners in shaping the future of our university and our region.”
To that end, his office will launch the FGCU Veterans Recognition Program as well as expand employer and community partnerships and a mentorship program to support academic success and career development.
To celebrate the nation’s semiquincentennial, the office will host FGCU Salutes: Service & Sacrifice Week, Nov. 9-13. This campus-wide event series will feature a Veterans Day & Flag Folding Ceremony on Nov. 10, veteran recognition awards, military resource expo, educational exhibits and community programming.
The initiative positions FGCU to become a regional leader in veteran and military education while deepening its community impact.
Eagle ID has gone mobile
FGCU rolled out Mobile Eagle ID, giving students and employees a more convenient, secure and contactless way to access campus services. Available through Apple and Android mobile wallets, the digital ID allows users to tap their phone or smartwatch at readers across campus — eliminating the need to carry a physical card.
Mobile Eagle ID functions just like the traditional card, making it easier to enter facilities, complete transactions and navigate daily campus life. Physical IDs will remain active during the transition, though some services will gradually shift to mobile-first access. The new option offers added flexibility while supporting a more streamlined, modern campus experience.

FGCU hosting ASUN tournaments
Sports fans will have at least two Atlantic Sun Conference championship tournaments at home to look forward to this year.
First up, the ASUN Volleyball Tournament Nov. 19-22 at Alico Arena. This fall marks the fourth consecutive year and the 10th time overall the Eagles have hosted the postseason event.
In spring, FGCU hosts the ASUN Baseball Tournament for the fourth time — but 2027 will mark the first time games will be played at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers. The spring training home of the Boston Red Sox, the park offers a championship-caliber experience with a capacity of 10,823. The tournament is May 26-29.
