Fun aplenty as campus celebrates FGCU at 20

Festivities for students, faculty and staff are 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Aug. 25

The Great Lawn may have just been a humble patch of recently laid turf when FGCU held its first day of classes two decades ago, but the now lovingly landscaped and decoratively pavered heart of campus will be a great location for the official FGCU at 20 Anniversary Celebration from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Aug. 25.

Students, faculty and staff will gather there 20 years to the day since the first class of Eagles reported for academic duty in 1997. The campus community will mark the milestone with a festival fit for two decades of FGCU’s outstanding growth and success — lots of carnival-style fun, interactive games, prizes, giveaways and special food. Guest speakers will include our new president, Mike Martin, who will address the gathering at 10 a.m.

Activities will center around the Veterans Pavilion — just one of several improvements that have been made over 20 years to the open space bounded by the FGCU Library, the main academic corridor, the student plaza and a pond. A memorial designed and constructed by Student Government to honor all military veterans, the pavilion was dedicated in 2013.

Trivia games will be part of the party, of course, so start studying up on our history at our special FGCU at 20 website.

We’ll end with a little factoid that shows just how much we’ve grown in this relatively short time. The inaugural enrollment in fall 1997 was 2,584; last fall FGCU welcomed 14,821 students.
