The Bower School of Music & the Arts has teamed up with TheatreZone of Naples to present the Tony-nominated roller-skating musical “Xanadu” Oct. 1-11 at FGCU’s Theatre Lab.
Based on the infamous 1980 film starring Olivia Newton-John, “Xanadu” is a musical comedy by playwright Douglas Carter Beane that uses songs from the film by John Farrar and Jeff Lynne of the Electric Light Orchestra. Tony-nominated actor Eddie Mekka, who rose to fame as Carmine Ragusa in the hit 1970s sitcom “Laverne & Shirley,” will star in the role of Danny Maguire, played in the movie by the legendary Gene Kelly.
“The musical tells the story of one of the nine muses of ancient Greece who comes to earth to inspire the greatest of artistic achievements – a roller disco. Along the way she falls in love, bumps into an old acquaintance and for the first time, feels the desire to create herself,” says TheatreZone Artistic Director Mark Danni.
Performances are at 8 p.m. Oct 1-3 and 8-10; 2 p.m. Oct. 3 and 11; and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4 and 11. Tickets are $40 or $45 and can be purchased on TheatreZone’s website. For more information, call TheatreZone at (888) 966-3352.
