The Art Galleries of the Bower School of Music & the Arts present “Visual Language: The Art of Typography and Creative Writing” in the ArtLab Gallery from Feb. 23 to March 30, co-curated by typography and graphic design instructor Sasha Minsky and writing instructor Jesse Millner.

TypeShowImageThe opening reception is 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23. The exhibition in the Library gallery is sponsored in part by U. Tobe, The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel, and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.

When typography, the design and creation of type, is applied to literary texts, this collaboration can result in a hybrid form of art that provides incredible visuals and summons intellectually stimulating experiences for both the artists and their audiences. This exhibition features the work of the “Special Topics Advanced Typography” course taught by Minsky in collaboration with Jesse Millner’s “Narrative Techniques” creative writing class. Students from each course worked together to bring literary narratives alive through the use of innovative typography techniques.

Student typographers are: Tiffany Billings, Anna Cooke, Kaitlin Dowis, Taryn Estrada, Marile Franco, Eduardo Guerra, Alyssa LaManna, Justin McDowell, Adam Robair, Andrea Rygala, Sarah Wasson and Angelina Zuniga-Reed. Student writers involved are: Taylor Sweat, Brandon Paul, Kimberly Rosales and Jacqueline Avetrani.

The ArtLab Gallery is in the west side of the Library building on FGCU’s main campus at 10501 FGCU Blvd. S. Parking is available in Lot 7 for gallery visitors; parking passes are available at the information booth at the University’s main entrance. Regular viewing hours are: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.
