Art and spoken word meet in ArtLab

1 - minute read

The ArtLab Gallery of the Bower School of Music & the Arts has a unique reception planned at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 31 for the opening of “Escuchala, La Ciudad Respirando (Listen, the City is Breathing).”

Featured artist Andres Martinez Jr. will present an introduction to his work to begin the evening. At 6 p.m., FGCU writing students will hold an open mic to share readings based on the exhibition.

The exhibition runs through April 28 and is sponsored in part by The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel and WGCU Public Media.

Martinez is inspired by city life, which provides him with the materials he needs to capture its essence. His spiritual upbringing, combined with his artistic practice, deepens his connection with the urban environment as he transforms everyday objects by integrating them into assemblages.

The ArtLab Gallery is at the west side of the Library building on FGCU’s main campus at 10501 FGCU Blvd. S. Parking is available in Lot 7 for gallery visitors; parking passes are available at the information booth at the university’s main entrance. Regular viewing hours are: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.
