Symposium focuses on human trafficking

FGCU’s Human Trafficking Resource Center presents a symposium on Thursday, Jan. 21 for professionals and students to learn more about issues related to criminal investigations and victim assistance.

Alex Olivares, a clinical mental health counselor and coordinator for the center, has organized a day of workshops in the Cohen Center ballroom. Registration begins at 7:45 a.m.

General admission is $25, or $40 for professionals seeking continuing education credits. Students from any university get in free. Refreshments and snacks will be provided, but lunch is not included. Registration is online.

Participants will have their choice of workshops:

Round 1:

  • Option A: Substance Abuse and Human Trafficking, Kristina Kardanow
  • Option B: Child Welfare Case Management with Minor Victims, Julio Gonzalez

Round 2:

  • Option A: Identifying and Assisting Male/Transgender Victims, Nathan Earle
  • Option B: Counseling and Forensic Interviews with Minor Victims, Sally Beckett and Jill Turner

Round 3:

  • Option A: Residential Services for Victims of Human Trafficking, Danielle Mordaunte
  • Option B: Foreign Born and Domestic Needs, Alex Olivares

Round 4:

  • Option A: Trauma Informed Care, Dr. Amanda Evans
  • Option B: Law Enforcement Case Study, Detective Andy Henchesmoore and Victim Advocate Marisol Schloendorne

The mission of FGCU’s Human Trafficking Resource Center is to work towards the elimination of human trafficking and modern day slavery by serving as a catalyst for public and private agencies, task forces and advocacy groups in the spirit of partnership and inclusiveness that will enhance collaboration and cooperation while engaging faculty and students in supporting and conducting research specific to the crime and related issues of trafficking in persons.
