The Art Galleries at Florida Gulf Coast University present the first show of the new school year, “FGCU Faculty Exhibition,” from Wednesday, Aug. 19 to Thursday, Sept. 24 in the Main Gallery. Faculty members will attend a reception for the show from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3. The exhibition is sponsored in part by WGCU Public Media.
The exhibition presents an opportunity to experience the range of subjects, materials and techniques that faculty explore in their individual artistic endeavors. Patricia Fay, Ehren Gerhard, James Greco, Geoffrey Hamel, Jake Hand, Sasha Minsky, Morgan Paine, Andy Owen, Michael Salmond and Mary Sullivan Voytek will exhibit sculpture, painting, ceramics, printmaking, photography, digital media and more.
Says adjunct instructor Geoffrey Hamel, whose work is shown above: “I would like to suggest a vista, albeit enigmatic, where the visual elements collectively convey multi-layered mysteries and paradoxes of the world around me. … It is through physical and psychological frictions and resistances, through painting and drawing, which I adore and cherish. This very action becomes my constant quest for truths, search for freedoms and meaningfulness.”
Associate Professor Andy Owen finds inspiration in the natural world for his richly textured prints.
“I share an affinity for the sea with many people, and any free time I have is spent on the waters of Southwest Florida,” he says. “This series of images is closely linked to personal experience and inspired by time spent in the Ten Thousand Islands. I often seek refuge in the islands, their remote bays and maze of shorelines offer new discoveries with each visit. In this work the notion of place provides me with a reference point, anchoring me as I am set adrift in the creative process, creating visual associations of my memories and experiences in this extraordinary region.”
The Main Gallery is in the Arts Complex at FGCU. Parking is available in Lot 7 and the adjacent garage. Regular viewing hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.
