Modern twist may shake up Shakespeare

1 - minute read

The Bower School of Music & the Arts’ Theatre Program presents its first full Shakespearean production at FGCU with “The Tempest,” a romantic comedy running Nov. 11-20 in TheatreLab.

Directed by Theatre Professor Barry Cavin, the production preserves the Bard’s traditional language but puts a modern spin on the time-honored tale. Having been forced into exile, a mother and daughter are stranded on an enchanted isle. The mother learns the island’s magical secrets and uses them to conjure a storm that will shipwreck her enemies on its shores.

Believed to have been written in 1610–11, “The Tempest” is considered by many scholars to be the last play William Shakespeare penned alone. This year marks the 400th anniversary of his death.

FGCU’s production features 11 students playing more than 20 characters. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11, 12, 18 and 19 and at 2 p.m. Nov. 13, 19 and 20. A post-performance discussion with the actors, director and crew follows the Nov. 19 show.

Individual tickets are $10 for the general public and $7 for students. Tickets and further information are available online or at the door (based on availability). TheatreLab is in the Arts Complex on the main campus, 10501 FGCU Blvd. S. Parking is available in Lot 7.
