Swimming, diving team gets new coach

Dave Rollins, former associate head men’s swimming coach at The Ohio State University, has been named the second head coach of FGCU’s women’s swimming and diving team. He replaces former head coach Neal Studd, a five-time Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Coach of the Year who was named head coach of Florida State University’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving program. Rollins brings 10 years of coaching experience to the job and was a nine-time NCAA All-American and national champion as a member of the University of Arizona swimming and diving team.

Three women compete in Rio Olympics

Two FGCU alumnae and one current student-athletes competed in the Summer Olympics in Rio this year. Representing the United States, Brooke Youngquist Sweat, ’08, and teammate Lauren Fendrick entered the beach volleyball competition as No. 15 overall seed of 24 teams. With Sweat nursing a sore shoulder, they lost to Poland, Brazil and Russia. Senior Evita Leter represented Suriname in the 100- meter breaststroke. Lani Cabrera, ’16, represented Barbados in the 400-meter freestyle. Both of the swimmers were eliminated in the preliminary rounds.

Athletics signature event reaches new heights

The seventh annual Night at the Nest will take place Friday, Dec. 2, at Alico Arena and organizers are expecting another stellar evening of support for the university’s athletics programs. The lively fundraiser will start at 5:30 p.m. Last year’s event raised a record $567,000, with proceeds going to support Eagles’ scholarships and operating budgets.
